Economica.net – The price of lamb is approaching the threshold of 10 euros per kilogram at the farm gate, after an increase of over 5% in a single week. Compared to last year, the price increase is 13.6%, above the EU average

About a month before the Orthodox Easter, the average price of lamb under 13 kilograms at the gates of Romanian farms approaches the threshold of 10 euros per kilogram (1,000 euros for a 100 kilogram carcass), joining an upward trend present in all member states, shows the latest European Commission data analyzed by Economica.

More precisely, the carcass of 100 kilograms of lamb under 13 kilograms was sold on March 27 at an average price of 993.8 euros, after a 5.1% increase in price compared to the previous week, also being 13.6% more expensive than in the same period last year.

Compared to last year’s average prices, Romania recorded the third highest price increase, after Estonia (plus 17.5%) and Hungary (17.1%), while at the EU level the average increase was 10.3%. This with the mention that the EU does not have data on all member states.

At EU level, the average farm gate price of a 100-kilogram carcass of lamb under 13 kilograms was 807.6 euros, 3.5% higher than the previous month.

As for the price of lambs over 13 kilograms, it reached an average of 580.4 euros 100 kilogram carcass, being 92.6% more expensive than a month ago and 90.6% above the level reported in the same period last year. In Romania, by far, the highest price increase was recorded among the member states, the second highest increase being for farmers in Ireland who asked, on average, 29% more than last year.

However, Romanian lamb remains the second cheapest in the EU, after Sweden, where farmers ask, on average, 769.1 euros for a 100-kilogram carcass. The average price in the EU is 807.6 euros for a 100-kilogram carcass.

How much lamb does Romania produce?

According to European Commission data, according to the number of slaughtered sheep, Romania is the second largest producer in the EU, after Estonia. Local breeders produced 702.9 tonnes of meat last year (until December), 7.4% less than the previous year, while Estonia’s output was 106.2 tonnes.
