Florentina Iancu seemed to be a healthy person until the beginning of last week, when her mood began to deteriorate rapidly, the woman complaining of fatigue and vomiting. On Friday, March 29, 2024, Florentina Iancu arrived at the “St. Spiridon” Iasi. Until the woman was operated on and received a healthy liver, her family experienced a real trauma. Florentina Iancu is the mother of four children aged 12, 10, 8 and 7. Maricica Iancu, Florentina’s mother, said that she didn’t even have the strength to tell the children that their mother was close to death.

“I came to Iasi with my daughter, Florentina Iancu, 33 years old. She was very sick. Know that she didn’t really have symptoms, she just got worse and worse in the last week. He started to turn yellow, had vomiting, severe fatigue. The first time I went to the hospital in Tecuci and from there they sent us here urgently, because in Iași it was the only option to be helped. Her condition deteriorated rapidly, on the way to the hospital she already started to be inactive, just staring and that was it, she was very yellow from head to toe, even her eyes. We have been staying in Iași for so many days, sleeping fast, until 10:00 p.m. we sit in the hospital yard, asking for information, everyone comes, helps us.

Dr. Irina Gîrleanu informed me that a donor had been found, she told us that it was someone from Bucharest, a brain-dead patient and compatible with my daughter. The team formed by Professor Cristian Lupașcu worked under stress. I thank all the doctors and the donor’s family, first of all, many thanks,” said Maricica Iancu, the patient’s mother.

Immediately after the transplant, the patient’s condition began to improve

Florentina Iancu received the liver transplant from a 56-year-old woman who was brain dead. Immediately after the intervention, the patient’s condition began to improve.

“A medical first, carried out in the Clinical Hospital «Sf. Spyridon”. A 33-year-old woman, from Galati County, was brought to the emergency room on Friday for liver failure caused by acute fulminant hepatitis, an extremely serious condition, possibly with a double etiology, toxic and viral. The patient’s condition was serious, comatose, and she was urgently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. The patient is a mother of four children and was apparently healthy until a few days ago. The transplant alert mechanism was triggered at the national level and the transplant coordinator here, from the «St. Spiridon”, identified the possibility of harvesting an organ from a brain-dead patient from the Bucharest University Hospital.

A surgeon left from Iași, went to the University Hospital, where together with the national transplant coordinator he harvested the organ, brought it by air very quickly, and on Sunday afternoon it was done by the team led by Prof. Dr. . Lupașcu and Prof. Dr. Blaj the transplant in this young woman. The immediate postoperative evolution is a favorable one and we hope that after days of Intensive Therapy, of collaboration with the Gastroenterology coordinator, Dr. Gîrleanu, the evolution will be a favorable one. Such a condition, we have the experience of many cases, has a very high risk of death. The liver is an organ without which the human body cannot function,” declared Prof. Dr. Diana Cimpoeșu, spokesperson of the “St. Spiridon” Iasi.

From the beginning of 2024 until now, at the “St. Spiridon” Iași, two liver transplant interventions were performed.

“This is the second blood transplant this year and it should have been the third, only last week there was another donor at the Neurosurgery Hospital, but unfortunately, due to pre-existing conditions, the liver could not be transplanted. In the current situation, it was a grade 0 emergency for the 33-year-old patient with acute liver failure. It just so happened that there was a compatible donor in Bucharest and the colleagues there agreed to give us the liver for this emergency,” said Dr. Raluca Neagu-Movilă, coordinator of the Regional Transplant Center in Iași.

The young woman who was on the verge of death due to a liver condition is still hospitalized at the “St. Spiridon” Iași, being carefully supervised by doctors.
