Local elections in Turkey this weekend delivered a resounding defeat for the AKP, the party led by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Ekrem Imamoglu, the incumbent mayor of Istanbul, won a decisive victory over Murat Kurum, the candidate supported by the Justice and Development Party (AKP). It thus proved that Imamoglu is still a formidable opponent for the Turkish president.

Local elections held in Turkey ended with a landslide victory for the Republican People’s Party (CHP), which is led by Ekrem Imamoglu, the incumbent mayor of Istanbul. He was re-elected with 50.92% of the vote, while his rival Murat Kurum, supported by the Justice and Development Party (AKP), got 40.05% of the vote.

Crushing defeat for Recep Erdogan’s party

Thus, following the elections, the opposition consolidated its control in the most important cities of Turkey. Specifically, for the first time in decades, the opposition won in all major cities of the country, namely Adana, Ankara, Antalya, Bursa, Izmir and Istanbul. At the same time, the result of the elections reconfirmed the status of the current mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu. Moreover, analysts quoted by the international media claim that he has now clearly become President Erdogan’s main rival in the struggle for power at the national level.

This is Ekrem Imamoglu’s third victory over Recep Erdogan. In March 2019, after Imamoglu won the Istanbul mayor post for the first time, a court annulled his victory. Thus, when the elections were repeated in June of the same year, Imamoglu won the elections again with an even bigger margin than his rival at the time, a close associate of Recep Erdogan.

Turkey’s president has conceded defeat

After the election results were released, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan conceded defeat to the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), which he leads. In addition, he announced that he would respect the decision of the people, there being no uncertainty about the results.

“Nine months after our victory in the May 2023 general and presidential elections, we unfortunately did not manage to achieve the result we wanted and hoped for in the municipal elections. The results will be analyzed, we will do it self-critically and objectively. The people sent us their message, their will and their warnings through the ballot boxes. We will not ignore our nation’s decision, we will not act against its will and we will not question it,” said Recep Erdogan.
