Starting today, March 31, 2024, Romania joined the Schengen, maritime and air space. This means that upon arrival at airports and ports in another Schengen member state, citizens will no longer go through additional document control.

As of today, March 31, Romanians going to the Schengen countries are no longer subject to border control at airports and ports. Specifically, they will be able to go directly to the boarding gates without checking their travel documents at Border Police checkpoints. However, the filters for baggage control will remain.

Travel to Schengen countries will need the same documents as before. The difference lies in the fact that there will no longer be checks on documents by the Border Police at the specially arranged counters. The documents will be presented only at the request of the border police officers at the airports and ports.

There will still be controls based on a risk analysis, if there are people whom the police consider suspicious, people under investigation or under judicial control. The policemen will be equipped with phones with special software with which they will be able to check the databases of all Schengen countries. Baggage checks will also remain.

For trips to non-Schengen countries, the travel conditions remain unchanged, and the documents will be checked at the Border Police control filters.

Schengen member states are: Austria, Bulgaria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden , Hungary, but also Switzerland, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein, which are not EU member countries.
