The members of the Piatra Neamț organization of the extremist AUR party resigned en masse, on Saturday, a few hours before George Simion arrived in the municipality, for a meeting with the electorate and the leadership of the organization. AUR coordinator Piatra Neamț reproached the party’s central leadership for imposing Marius Apopei, a former PNL county councilor, on the mayor’s office, and that the branch was not consulted before the decision.

Asked by local journalists how to comment, Simion said that Apopei has “God as its master” and that the members of the organization resigned, in fact, “in October last year”:

  • “The Lord of the Apocalypse has the most important master, God (…) They resigned from October last year, now they want to revolt. We don’t like arrangements,” said George Simion.

It should be noted, however, that Piatra Neamț is not the first AUR organization in which members resign recently. On February 9, Ovidiu Szime, the former president of AUR Timisoararesigned from the party on the very evening of the anti-commissioning election protest, organized by the extremist party in several counties in the country and in the capital, in front of the PSD headquarters.

Later, Szime wrote on his Facebook page that he is leaving AUR because “its basic principles and status” are not being respected. Simion accused him of colluding with the PSD.

Szime’s resignation came after another wave of departures from AUR, such as Dumitru Coarnă and members of AUR Călărași who accused non-respect of the party statute and the fact that AUR leaders refuse to establish county branches.

And the former PNL minister Virgil Popescu announced that 15 AUR Mehedinți organizations have switched to the liberals. Journalist Dan Tăpălagă explained the signals that indicate a possible deflation of AUR a few months before the elections, amid the departures from the party.
