Farmers have explanations for the steep cost of tomatoes. They say they had huge expenses during the winter. That’s because they had to heat the solariums throughout the cold season.

Agricultural work also cost them more compared to previous years, producers say. Thus, Romanian tomatoes can leave the farmers with a price of 30-40 lei, and in the markets a kilogram is sold for 50 lei.

In May, around the Easter holidays, prices should be more affordable, somewhere around 10-11 lei per kilogram, says the same farmer. On the other hand, customers are of the opinion that the current price of tomatoes is exaggerated.
