Dubai’s JBR Beach will have fewer sunny days, MIT experts say PHOTO: Lonely Planet

A study conducted by experts from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, published in the Journal of Climate, announces terrible news for tourists, including Romanians who go on vacation abroad. The researchers found that due to climate change, the number of sunny days will decrease in tropical destinations such as the Dominican Republic, Mexico, India, Thailand and Egypt. But other countries will also be affected, such as some in the Mediterranean, but also a top tourist attraction in the Arab area, by 2100.

The Dominican Republic, known for its good weather, will have 124 fewer “good beach days” in 75 years – meaning a huge hit to the quality of life and its tourism-dependent economy, according to Bloomberg.

By the end of the century, Nordic residents will generally see the sunny, spring-like balm appear earlier in the winter. In contrast, those in the south – including the equatorial regions and extending into southern Europe and the US – will mostly enjoy fewer days of temperate weather throughout the year.

That’s the conclusion of a groundbreaking study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, published in the Journal of Climate in March, that predicts the long-term effects of climate change on select destinations around the world. The research combines data from 50 climate models to detail how the “outdoor days” will be numbered in different destinations by 2100.

The term refers to 24-hour windows in which temperatures are pleasant enough for most people to enjoy outdoor activities. (Winter sports don’t count.) The implications are enormous for quality of life, travel and tourism.

“Changes in the number of days outdoors will have a direct impact on how people around the world feel about climate change,” said MIT environmental engineering professor Elfatih Eltahir, who led the study.

“Russia, Canada and other countries in the Global North will have more outdoor days in the future,” says Yeonwoo Choi, a postdoctoral researcher at MIT and a member of the research team. “On the other hand, developing countries like Côte d’Ivoire will have fewer days outdoors, so there is a clear difference between the Global North and the Global South.”

The greatest effects are expected in tropical destinations. The Dominican Republic, with 124 fewer outdoor days by 2100, will see a 50% decrease in year-round temperate climate.

Mexico, India, Thailand and Egypt, all in the Northern Hemisphere, will experience similar reductions, losing 55 to 86 outdoor days per year. The United Arab Emirates will also suffer; it is expected to lose 85 days of good weather annually, not counting a possible increase in the torrential rains that this month brought Dubai airport to unprecedented gridlock.

In contrast, France, Britain, Germany and Austria will gain 18 to 60 days outdoors by 2100. This will be largely due to warmer winters – bad news for the ski industry. In the Mediterranean, Greece is projected to lose more than 30 outdoor days by 2100 due to hot summer temperatures from May to September.

Who gains sunny days (annually): Austria – plus 52, France – 18, Germany – 28, Great Britain – 60, USA (California) – 4. Who loses sunny days: Greece – minus 37, Italy – 7, Mexico – 86, Spain – 13, Turkey – 11, United Arab Emirates – 85, USA – (Florida) – 68.
