The interest of many countries in the world in the euro and the dollar is gradually decreasing, the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, told journalists in Minsk.

A video recording of the conversation was published by a telegram channel, close to the press service of the head of state, reports Stiri.md with reference to the Russian press.

“For us, as for the rest of the world, the euro and the dollar are the same thing. That’s how it was, before the sanctions. Now, neither the dollar nor the euro is useful to anyone. And this not only in Belarus and Russia, but also in other countries,” he said.

Such a trend, according to the Belarusian president, began to develop “especially after there was talk about the theft of reserves and assets, which the Russians kept in the West.

“I talked to several leaders. They say: “If it’s like this with a nuclear power, what will happen to us?”” added Lukashenko.

On April 24, US President Joe Biden signed into law a law that provides for the seizure of frozen Russian assets in the US for further funding of aid to Ukraine. At the same time, the spokesman of the US State Department, Matthew Miller, said the day before that Washington has nothing to announce on the subject of confiscation of Russian assets, despite the adoption of the document.

A day earlier, on May 8, EU ambassadors agreed in principle to use windfall profits from frozen Russian assets in the EU to support Ukraine.

The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, supported this decision.

Russian presidential spokesman Dmitriy Peskov warned that Moscow would take retaliatory measures if its frozen assets were seized in favor of Ukraine, including by going to court.
