Jake Paul will take on boxing Hall of Famer Mike Tyson in one of the most anticipated (and oddest) bouts of the summer.

Paul (9-1) last fought March 2, picking up a first-round knockout against Ryan Bourland in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The 57-year-old Tyson (50-6) last fought professionally in 2005 when he was defeated by Kevin McBride, although more recently he fought fellow Hall of Famer Roy Jones Jr. in an exhibition bout in Los Angeles in 2020.

Paul, the YouTube star turned professional boxer, was featured on the undercard of Tyson’s exhibition against Jones Jr., knocking out former NBA player Nate Robinson in the second round.

Rules for Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul fight

The rules for this heavyweight bout have not yet been announced.

The first determination to make is whether the fight will be an exhibition bout, or officially sanctioned by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), according to USA TODAY Sports.

The TDLR has received a request to hold an event on July 20 but has not received any information on the proposed fight card, which is necessary to determine whether the bout will be exhibited or officially sanctioned.

“The promoter generally will tell us what they would like to see happen and they submit the paperwork, then we evaluate the information that’s provided and look at a number of different things and we decide what is the safest, and whether it’s appropriate for certain people to fight. If we need additional information, then we’ll request it and then we go on,” Tela Mange, Communications Manager for the TDLR, told The Tennessean.

If the bout is an exhibition, there would be a few rule changes that can be expected, according to Mange.

Paul and Tyson would fight 2-minute rounds rather than 3-minute rounds, as is standard in all professional male boxing fights. Gloves weighing 16 ounces could be used rather than the standard 10-ounce gloves. The fight would also include fewer rounds, although the specific number can vary among exhibition fights. Finally, there would be no official judges scoring the bout to determine a winner.

Mange told USA TODAY Sports that the decision on whether the fight is ruled an exhibition or professional bout will be made by Brian E. Francis, interim executive director of the TDLR, along with input from the TDLR Combative Sports staff.
