The government will maintain the measure of capping electricity and gas prices and will modify the ceilings in favor of consumers, taking into account the trend of reducing energy and gas prices at the European level, said Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu.

“Fair prices for Romanians”

“We promised the Romanians that we would maintain the ceiling on energy and gas prices until the spring of 2025. Today we are taking an extra step and modifying the ceilings in favor of consumers. It is normal to take into account the tendency to reduce energy and gas prices at the European level. The population and the economy continue to be protected and we also ensure that the return to the free market is phased until 2026 with fair prices for Romanians”, declared Marcel Ciolacu, on Thursday, in the Government meeting.

In addition, the Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja, stated that the current compensation-ceiling scheme provided Romanians with the fourth cheapest gas in the European Union and the fifth cheapest electricity.

“We take into account the declines in the market”

“We are talking about the capped values. These are the Eurostat data from the third quarter of last year. Through today’s proposal we are optimizing this scheme and taking into account the decreases on the electricity and natural gas market. Moreover, today Romania has the most on the wholesale market low price of electricity in the region and one of the lowest in the European Union. Therefore, the investments started are beginning to be seen in the markets and must be seen in the bills of the Romanians,” declared Sebastian Burduja.

He emphasized that the measure also represents a preparation for the stage after 2025, by which it is ensured that the suppliers will make correct offers for the final consumers, both for domestic and non-domestic ones.

“Also, as promised, we proposed the repeal of the possibility of imposing that tax on the sun, the repeal of the article that from 2026 would have given ANRE the possibility to impose a tax on prosumers. We encourage the phenomenon of prosumers”, declared Burduja.
