A year and a half, that’s about how long it took to modernize the Libertății Square, from the moment the Central Park was closed, which was the first step towards the transformation of the entire area. Today, the Satmăra authorities gave the first details about how the project was carried out and talked about how the modernization of the Old Center hopes to revitalize the economic life in Piaţa Libertății as well.

The City Hall of the Municipality of Satu Mare announced today the completion of the project “Modernization and expansion of the pedestrian and bicycle route Old Center of the municipality of Satu Mare”, a project financed by the Regional Operational Program 2014-2020. At the beginning of November 2022, the authorities closed the Central Park, the first step towards the modernization of the area, and then continued with the pedestrian restrictions.

“We have come to the end of quite a long road. Since 2016, I have said that the modernization of the Old Center is a must. In 2020, we won the project worth approximately 27 million lei,” said the mayor of Kereskényi Gábor about the project that has reached its end today and that started in November 2022.

The mayor also thanked the villagers who were patient throughout the project. Regarding the parking lots, the mayor stated that he is advancing the projects for the two multi-story parking lots that will provide more than 300 parking spaces in the central area of ​​the city.

The official inauguration will take place today, at 5:00 p.m., the officials also announced, who also stated that the villagers can expect a commensurate artistic program with the official reopening.

Road traffic on the stretch of Păstrăvului str. (Casa Albă) – Cuza Vodă str. and the access of public transport to Piața Libertății will reopen only from Tuesday, April 2.

The modernization of the Old Center consisted in expanding the area accessible to pedestrians and cyclists, by setting up some modernized pedestrian areas, as well as creating a bicycle path. The project envisaged the creation of a dedicated lane for public passenger transport, including the rehabilitation of the carriageway part of the road infrastructure.

The modernization of the central area of ​​Piaţa Libertăţii involved the reconfiguration of the existing pedestrian alleys, through the creation of new pedestrian routes, as well as the furnishing of urban furniture and the redevelopment of green spaces.

Libertății Square has become a center with pedestrian alleys, green spaces, terrace and relaxation areas. A bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure was created, and the entire area thus revitalized through the expansion of green spaces, modernized artesian wells, restored sidewalks and alleys.
