After a testing period, Microsoft implemented ads in the final version of Windows 11, where they end up being seen by all users.

Windows 11 started showing ads to all users after the latest update. These consist of promoted applications and are visible directly in the Start menu.

To avoid the phrase “advertising”, which is not to the liking of users, Microsoft calls ads in Windows 11 recommendations.

Ads in the Start menu are enabled by default, but luckily they can be turned off from Settings > Personalization > Start by turning off the “Show recommendations for tips, app promotions, and more” option.

The new ads are introduced via the KB5036980 update, which is currently optional but will be pushed to all Windows 11 PCs in the coming weeks.

Thus, Windows 11 becomes an adware operating system, despite the fact that its license is paid.
