Microsoft unveiled Phi-3 Mini, a simplified version of its artificial intelligence models tailored for low-processing power devices such as smartphones and tablets.

The Phi-3 Mini is designed to deliver AI capabilities in a compact, low-resource package, ideal for devices with less powerful hardware. The model uses a language with 3.8 billion parameters, a considerable reduction compared to the more complex versions, Phi-3 Small and Phi-3 Medium, which have 7 billion and 14 billion parameters respectively, writes Android Police.

What tasks can the Phi-3 Mini perform?

However, the Phi-3 Mini can perform less complex tasks, making it suitable for applications that do not require extreme processing power. This model is an example of how advanced technologies can be adapted to work efficiently on wearable devices, increasing the accessibility of AI technology.

Eric Boyd, vice president of Microsoft’s Azure AI Platform, pointed out that while the Phi-3 Mini doesn’t compare to other AI models, it can handle lighter tasks. Thus, the model is more affordable and promises improved performance on devices such as laptops and mobile phones.

Also, to improve Phi-3 Mini’s performance, an LLM (large language model) was used that created a “children’s book” from a list of 3,000 words to “educate” the AI ​​model. This strategy allowed the model to improve its coding and reasoning ability, demonstrating that even simpler AIs can evolve and provide effective solutions.
