Almost 60 years after committing a brutal crime, the police found and arrested the perpetrator thanks to state-of-the-art forensic techniques.

In 1966, Karen Snider, an 18-year-old mother from Calumet City, near Chicago, was stabbed more than 120 times while her baby slept next to her. The body of the young woman was found by her husband on November 12, 1966. The investigations made then did not lead to any results and the case was forgotten.

But now James Barbier, who is 79, has been arrested and will be charged with murder after his DNA was found on Karen’s clothes, according to CNN.

“It was probably one of the best news of my life”said Paula Larson, Karen Snider’s daughter, about the moment she was told the investigation into her mother’s death had reopened.

She waited 57 years for the case to be solved. She was a few months old when her mother was killed. “She was a beautiful woman”Paula also said about her mother whom, in fact, she never got to know.

Her father, Paul Snider, worked on the railroad and came home late at night on the day his wife was killed. He only told Paula what happened to her mother when she was 11 years old.

James Barbier, the man now arrested, worked alongside Paul Snider and even helped with the funeral by carrying his victim’s coffin.

“The police noticed at the funeral that he had injuries, so they kept an eye on himPaula Larson said.

Barbier was questioned at the time, but not charged.

Now DNA tests done by the new methods have clearly proved that James Barbier was involved in the murder. After his arrest, Barbier was brought before a judge, but the judge allowed him to return home to Missouri to await trial due to poor health.
