With the release of the Vision Pro augmented reality headset, Apple presented a way for us to “relive memories”. The Camera application on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max received the “Spatial Videos” option through which you can shoot special clips that can be watched on a virtual reality headset like the Vision Pro. However, it seems that a third party app does better in this department, and it only costs $3. I have details below.

It is about the application called “Spatialify”, available in the App Store. It’s worth mentioning that you need an iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max to work. Also, the Spatial Videos function is only useful if you plan to watch the clips captured on a Vision Pro headset, a very expensive device. Returning to the application, it allows making 3D clips either in Full HD quality, 60 FPS, or in 4K quality in 30 FPS with HDR enabled.

Apple, on the other hand, only allows users to shoot in Full HD quality at 30 FPS, without HDR. It is worth noting that these clips are saved in HEVC format and can also be watched using a Meta Quest 3 virtual reality headset, a much cheaper device than the Vision Pro.

Engadget has tested the app and it seems that the captures are indeed more detailed and smoother than those made using the dedicated option. It is not the first time that third-party applications manage to offer more useful functions than the dedicated ones offered by Apple.

It’s possible that Apple will announce similar shooting options for Spatial Videos in the future, perhaps with the debut of the iPhone 16. A
