Jaqueline Cristian tonight qualified for the 2nd round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid. The Romanian prevailed in two sets against Magdalena Frech (51st WTA), score 7-5, 6-, after an hour of play.
Our athlete entered the match more difficult, winning the first game with a score of 2-0 for the Pole. Afterwards, Frech, who had not won a match on the circuit since her loss in Dubai to Elena Rybakina, tied 3 games to take a 5-1 lead.
That was when Jaqueline recovered and canceled two set points from her opponent, managing to win 6 consecutive games and close the set at 7-5.
The Romanian continued her good game in the second part of the match, when she tied 5 more games, reaching 11 wins in a row. Frech managed to end Jaqueline’s streak and won two games, but did not have the strength to turn the result around.
Cristian qualified, thus, in the 2nd round of the competition, where he will face Barbora Krejcikova, favorite no. 22 from Madrid, who stayed in the first round. The two have met only once before, in 2022, in Sydney, when the Czech won, score 6-1, 7-5.
TWO MORE ROMANIANS ARE IN ROUND 2 IN MADRID
It is about Sorana Cîrstea, who will make her debut in the competition in this phase, benefiting from the status of seed, and Irina Begu, who obtained the qualification this afternoon, after defeating Linda Fruhvirtova in two sets.
Sorana Cîrstea, favorite no. 27, will play in the 2nd round with Alexandra Eala (ranked 170 WTA), who was beaten in the opening round by Lesia Tsurenko (ranked 41 WTA), score 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
