The inspection was launched at the behest of Belarusian leader Aleksandr Lukashenko, a Kremlin ally. “The division of the operational-tactical complex Iskander and the squadron of Su-25 aircraft are ready to perform the tasks as intended,” said Defense Minister Viktor Hrenin.

He added that the verification operations cover “the entire range of activities, from planning and preparation to the execution of tactical nuclear weapons strikes.”

The Secretary of the Security Council of Belarus, Aleksandr Volfovich, justified this inspection by the current “political-military situation”, “first of all around” his country. However, he acknowledged that the activities in Belarus are being organized “in sync” with the tactical nuclear exercise announced by Russia on Monday.

Under the pretext of “provocative statements” from the West, the Russian army announced the conduct of an exercise with tactical nuclear weapons in which troops stationed near Ukraine will participate in particular. Moscow did not specify a specific date for the exercise, saying only that it would take place “in the near future”.

This announcement follows statements from Moscow against the possibility of deploying nuclear weapons in Poland. Polish President Andrzej Duda said last month he wanted such weapons in his country after Russia militarized the Kaliningrad enclave and installed nuclear weapons in Belarus amid the war in Ukraine.

In the context of the war in Ukraine, the Kremlin leader has repeatedly threatened to use nuclear weapons. The US and other Western states usually denounce such threats and assure that they have not yet observed changes in Russia’s nuclear posture. At the same time, Kiev considers these threats as an attempt by Moscow to demoralize and discourage the West to support the Ukrainian army in the face of the Russian invasion.
