Microsoft recently released the latest preview update for Windows 11, incorporating new features and improvements, including Start menu “recommendations” and updates to desktop and lock screen widgets. This optional Windows 11 April Update, available for builds 22H2 and 23H2, brings app recommendations to the forefront of the Start menu, a step that can be interpreted as the occasional introduction of ads for various apps.

This change in the Start menu is not the only novelty; users will also be able to see frequently used applications that are not already pinned to the menu, thus facilitating quick access to important resources. Compared to its predecessor, Windows 10, this is a positive change that will be rolled out to all users with the May Patch Tuesday update.

Although the introduction of recommendations in the Start menu may seem invasive to some, Microsoft offers the option to disable this feature in the Windows 11 Settings app, allowing users to avoid the display of recommendations, but also to opt out of other functionality associated with them.

In addition to the Start menu changes, the update also brings significant improvements to desktop and lock screen widgets. Microsoft has fixed some visual issues, such as blurry icons on the taskbar, and added new animated icons, creating a more attractive and dynamic interface. Lock screen widgets have also been optimized to provide a more reliable and personalized experience.

While it’s unusual for Windows 11 builds to have known issues, Microsoft has identified an issue with changing your profile picture after installing this update. The company has promised to fix this issue in a future update, expecting the fix to be available with May’s Patch Tuesday update.

With these improvements, Microsoft continues to strengthen its Windows 11 platform, increasing the utility and personalization of the user experience while maintaining a balance between innovation and familiarity. This strategy not only improves the functionality of the operating system, but also strengthens Microsoft’s position as a leader in software technology.
