After several years of research, development and promotion, Amazon is abandoning the development of the Just Walk Out technology, which it used to check and automatically pay for purchased products.

Amazon has begun removing Just Walk Out technology from its grocery stores, which at one time seemed like the future of shopping.

Just Walk Out consisted of a set of technologies, such as sensors, video cameras and human supervisors, through which products purchased by customers were checked.

Then, upon leaving the store, the payment was made automatically, after scanning the palm, the money being automatically withdrawn from the card associated with the Amazon account.

The technology, however, ran into problems from the start. Although Amazon talked about a fully automated process, in reality, more than 1,000 people were watching security cameras to make sure no customer left with more products than they paid for.

With all the technology and the people behind the cameras, there were often inconsistencies that forced customers to still end up in front of a cashier to resolve the situation.

Another matter taken into account by the American giant was that of costs. The whole system cost a lot to install and operate.

In addition, there was also the issue of privacy, as the system collected a large amount of personal data, including biometrics. The company is already facing a lawsuit in New York, in which it is accused of collecting this data without notifying its customers.

Amazon tried to cut its losses by selling the technology to other chain stores, but they didn’t flock to buy it.
