The Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began over two years ago, heralds a new era in Europe, a period characterized by hostility, believes Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, reports DPA on Friday, reports Agerpres.

“I know it sounds devastating, especially for the younger generation, but we have to get used to the fact that a new era has begun: the pre-war era. I am not exaggerating; this becomes more and more clear every day”, said the head of the Polish executive for the German daily Die Welt and European partner media.

“I don’t want to scare anyone, but war is no longer a concept of the past. It is real and it started over two years ago”, continued Tusk.

In his opinion, the most worrying thing at the moment is that practically any scenario is possible: “I haven’t encountered a situation like this since 1945”. That year, World War II ended with the surrender of Hitler’s Germany.

At the same time, Donald Tusk stated that we are witnessing a revolution in the European mentality, characterized by the fact that no one questions the need for common defense anymore.

“Let’s look at Germany, where an enormous transformation has taken place. Today, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) are competing to see which of them is more pro-Ukrainian”, explained the Polish Prime Minister.

Regarding the instrumentalization of the issue of migrants by Russia, Tusk spoke for a more consistent protection of the EU’s external borders. “The European Union as a whole, as a strong organization, must be mentally prepared to fight for the security of our borders and our territory,” he concluded.
