Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu announced, on Thursday, at the beginning of the government meeting, that the shops will not be closed on the weekend, stressing that, “from all the signals received from society, it is clear that it is not appropriate”.
“I want to close a topic that has caused public debate: the one related to store hours and the closing of stores on weekends. From all the signals received from society, it is clear that it is not appropriate for shops to be closed on the weekend. As far as I can remember, markets were closed during the pandemic or shops were closed. I want to inform you that we are no longer at that stage”, stated Prime Minister Ciolacu.
The request to close the supermarkets on the weekend came last week from the owners of small shops. Initially, Prime Minister Ciolacu said that the idea would be analyzed.
A few days ago, small retailers announced that, indeed, the total closing of large stores on weekends cannot be done and proposed to reduce their hours until 1 p.m., justifying the need for employees in supermarkets and malls to stay with their families.
