The government is preparing several normative acts on salary increases, which will be adopted by July 1, when the minimum wage also increases. What exactly is it about?

The minimum wage increases in Romania from July 1

Against the backdrop of a busy election year, the Government announced new plans for salary increases. Several normative acts are being prepared that could bring significant changes to the salary landscape of the country. It is estimated that these normative acts will be adopted by July, which will coincide with a new increase in the minimum wage in the economy.

Starting July 1, the minimum wage for the economy will increase, going up from 3,300 lei to 3,700 lei gross. This increase will also be reflected in the pockets of Romanians, bringing an additional income of just over 200 lei per month. At the same time, starting from the same date, the implementation mechanism of the European minimum wage will also be implemented, because by then the three relevant normative acts will be adopted.

The European minimum wage will be set at half of the average gross wage in the economy, estimated at approximately 2,300 lei net. The calculation formula will take into account national labor productivity and inflation, and wage increases will follow a well-defined calendar.

These initiatives come in a context where every country in the European Union is obliged to comply with a uniform European legislation regarding the minimum wage.

Marcel Ciolacu wants a predictable and clear mechanism

Moreover, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said on Friday that the mechanism regarding the European minimum wage must be predictable and very clear, especially since it will be a measure at the European level.

“Yes, the mechanism starts. We can’t stay, this form is a bit empirical in which there is a negotiation with social actors, employers and unions and the Government decides by how much and how, depending on certain parameters.

I think it must be something predictable and a very clear mechanism, especially since now it will be a mechanism at the European level,” said Ciolacu.

The head of the PSD previously stated that he recently asked the Minister of Labor to make public the draft law on the adoption of the European minimum wage in Romania. This will happen after Easter.

The next target, assumed by the government program, is that by January 1, 2025 no full-time employee earns less than 500 euros net monthly.
