Dozens of tornadoes have struck the central United States, causing significant damage and injuring at least three people, according to authorities.

More than 70 tornadoes were recorded Friday by the American Weather Services (NWS), most of them around Omaha, Nebraska and near Iowa.

Images from storm chasers at the scene posted on social media show huge black swirls sweeping across the sky, kicking up dirt, dust and materials in their path.

The result of tornadoes are dozens of destroyed buildings, downed power lines, derailed trains.

In Elkhorn, a suburb of Omaha, images show destroyed houses, blown roofs, bare trees. “Rescuers continue to check affected homes and provide assistance to anyone injured,” Omaha police wrote on X.

Further south, near the city of Lincoln, a tornado hit an industrial hangar. The approximately 70 people who were there when the building collapsed were evacuated.

Three of them are injured, but their lives are not in danger, Lancaster County authorities said in a press conference.

The NWS, which issued numerous tornado warnings for several states in the central United States on Friday, said the weather phenomenon will continue Saturday in this vast region of agricultural plains, including into Texas.

Tornadoes are relatively common in the United States, especially in the central and southern parts of the country.
