Florin Zalomir, world champion in fencing in 2009, was found dead on Monday morning, the first information indicating that he committed suicide.

The athlete, who had been registered with Dinamo, was found dead in a house in Otopeni, shot.

He worked for several years at the Bucharest Gendarmerie and had a valid psychological certificate, judicial sources told Gândul.

The case was taken over by the police officers of the Ilfov Criminal Investigation Service, in order to accurately establish the factual and legal situation and take the necessary legal measures.

“Today, October 3rd, at around 8:34, the Ilfov County Police Inspectorate was notified by a woman, regarding the fact that, in a building in the town of Otopeni, a man died in his home”, the Ilfov Police sent on Monday.

Otopeni city police went to the scene to make checks.

“With deep regret, we confirm the tragic news of the death of our colleague, who was found breathless this morning in his home.

We regret his loss and extend our condolences to the bereaved family.

The gendarme was an officer in the General Directorate of Gendarmes of the Municipality of Bucharest and was 41 years old. At the most recent psychological evaluation, he was declared fit.

The circumstances in which the event occurred are to be elucidated by the competent institutions.

May God forgive him!”, the Bucharest Gendarmerie transmitted.

Who is Florin Zalomir and what results did he have in fencing?

Gelu Florin Zalomir was born on April 1, 1981, in Iasi. He was Olympic vice-champion in London 2012world champion in 2009 and European champion in 2006.

In 2012, Florin Zalomir decided to retire, because he could not live only on the salary from the club. He became a fencing coach at CS Dinamo Bucharest and in the national team, alongside Mihai Covaliu and Dan Găureanu.

He participated in the European Championship in Koblenz, placing 33rd in the individual and 8th in the team. A few months later he took part in the World Championship in Nîmes, where Romania won the bronze medal. After the competition he chose to stay in France and join the Foreign Legion, an elite unit of the French Army, because he was “fascinated by the army, the uniforms and military discipline”.
