The whole planet is now wondering what he will do with her and how she will rule the monarchy she represents. Will Charles be as loved by his subjects? It is a question that has haunted him, in fact, his entire life.

The Prince of Wales became king after the longest royal apprenticeship in history.

Tami Hoffman, ITN Productions: “Charles is already 70 years old. He is the oldest person to ascend the throne in the United Kingdom, and he has had decades to prepare for this moment.”

During this time, the Queen Mother was his guardian. In public, even he addressed Elizabeth II as “Majesty” – but watch the Queen’s reaction when they were both on stage at an anniversary concert. Elizabeth II was then 96 years old.

Queen Elizabeth II changed the tradition

Charles was 3 years old when Elizabeth became queen in 1952. For the little prince, childhood was difficult, because his young mother had to put her service in the service of the kingdom above all else.

Elizabeth was the first to break with tradition – as we saw, dramatized, in the series “The Crown”, and Charles was the first heir to the British royal crown who was not educated at home, and the first to obtain a university degree, even if sometimes it was not easy for him, as he admitted in an interview granted to the American presenter Barbara Walters, in 1985.

King Charles III: “I failed the math exams three times. I passed them on the fourth attempt.”

Charles received the title of Prince of Wales in 1969. At the time, the public knew him more as a young cray. He was a helicopter pilot, enlisted in the naval squadron and later took command of a minesweeper. Women swarmed around him.

The Women in the Life of King Charles III

When he was 31, Charles proposed to Amanda Knatchbull, his uncle’s niece, but was turned down. He then met Camilla Shand, but she married someone else while he was in the army.

In 1980, the idyll began with Lady Diana Spencer, the younger sister of a girl from the prince’s entourage.

Prince Charles: “I’m quite amazed that she was brave enough to accept me.”

Reporter: And I guess in love too?

Prince Charles: “Of course.”

Reporter: No matter what it means to be in love.

750 million people from all over the globe watched, in the summer of the following year, the marriage ceremony of the two.

That day, it seemed that Cinderella had found her prince. William, now heir to the throne, was born less than a year later. Harry was born in 1984. Then, the fairy tale was shattered.

Charles then admitted to cheating on Diana and divorce followed.

A year later – after Diana’s tragic end – Charles had to learn to raise his children alone. Many years passed before the British forgave him for his infidelity. In 2005, his childhood sweetheart, Camila Parker Bowles, became his second wife.

Unlike his mother, the Queen, who refused to discuss her views publicly, Charles has given speeches and written articles on topics close to his heart, such as alternative medicine, green energy and climate change.

He is also recognized for the pranks he does from time to time. Here he is during a visit to BBC headquarters in Scotland.

“Aha… it’s going to snow in the higher reaches of… a few flakes above Balmoral… Who the hell wrote that?” he said, as he presented the weather.

In 1985, he answered the challenge of some break-dancers.

He experimented with being a DJ and an eagle tamer, climbed rock climbing walls and had fun trying on weird hats.

How he became Romania’s friend

But he likes nature the most and is a good friend of Romania. He fell in love with the Transylvanian villages and their inhabitants, since his first visit to us, in 1998.

De Viscri, Saschiz or Valea Zălanului, many heard only after he visited them and promoted their values. King Charles has several properties in our country – including a house in Valea Zălanului.

King Charles III: “I have come to know and appreciate so much in Romania, there are many places to explore, and domestic tourism has an exceptional potential to create new jobs and generate prosperity, even in the most isolated rural areas.”

The interview given to Andrea Esca

But Charles is connected to Romania more than that – as he told Andrea Esca in an interview in 2017.

Andreea Esca: Do you know that in Romania people affectionately call you Prince Charles of Transylvania?

King Charles III: “I did not know. My great-grandfather, King George V, had a first cousin, Maria, who became Queen Maria of Romania. I know that he dedicated his life to this country. Then I discovered that my great-great-great-grandmother, my great-grandmother’s great-grandmother, Queen Mary, had come from Transylvania.”

Charles’ mother, Queen Elizabeth II, was a third cousin of King Mihai. At the Romanian monarch’s funeral, Charles laid a wreath in front of the Royal Palace before the ceremony.

The new king visited Romania this summer as well.

King Charles III: “I count Vlad Țepeș among my ancestors, which could explain why every time I visit, a part of me feels at home. I will continue, as long as I can, to advocate for the importance of protecting and celebrating Romania’s unique treasures and precious biodiversity, wildlife and majestic forests. See you again”
