Romania is open to discussing sending a Patriot system to Ukraine

Klaus Iohannis declared that he will discuss the issue with the Supreme Council of National Defense. “There has been a discussion about who can send Patriot systems to Ukraine in recent weeks,” Iohannis said. “President Biden brought it up … in our meeting and I said I’m open to discussions. I have to discuss it in the Supreme Council of National Defense to see what we can offer and what we can get in return, because it is unacceptable to leave Romania without air defense”.

The Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, asked the European NATO member states to donate PATRIOT anti-aircraft systems to Ukraine, stating that there are almost 100 batteries in the equipment of the allied armies.

Romania has four PATRIOT batteries, bought three more systems last year, but has operationalized only one battery and fired only one missile so far. President Zelensky declared that if they received more anti-aircraft systems, the Ukrainian Army would also defend the airspace of Moldova and Romania.
