6,679 garages were abolished and 7,165 new parking spaces were created in their place, Cluj-Napoca City Hall representatives reported.

“Cluj-Napoca City Hall is creating new parking spaces in the city’s neighborhoods. During the last 4 years, the City Hall started the process of abolishing the garages in the city’s neighborhoods. Starting from 2019, the public space was made more efficient, thus, by abolishing 6679 garages, 7165 new parking spaces for citizens were created”, the representatives of Cluj-Napoca City Hall said.

Garages will gradually disappear

Mayor Emil Boc declared last fall that all garages in the city will gradually disappear.

“The garages must disappear from Cluj-Napoca in order to create spaces for the people of Cluj. They will be removed step by step, respecting the law. Unfortunately, in the post-communist period when land was retroceded, with land under garages being the subject of retrocession, and there you cannot intervene with the bulldozer, because it is no longer public property, it is private property and it must be expropriated or found other solutions”, explained Emil Boc, during a local radio intervention.

The garage demolition project was initiated in 2018 and aims at restructuring and urban regeneration in the neighborhoods of Cluj-Napoca to increase the quality of life of citizens by improving the urban space.
