The National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management has issued several warnings regarding possible floods following the rains, in the areas of several rivers in the country. Most recently, on Wednesday afternoon, a code orange warning which targets Crișul Pietros and the tributaries downstream from Pietroasa.

According to the INHGA, a flood code orange is in effect from 6pm until midnight on Wednesday.

“As a result of the rainfall recorded in the last hours, the forecast and the propagation, important leaks can occur on slopes, torrents, streams, rapid floods on small rivers with possible severe effects of local floods and significant increases in flows and levels with possible exceedances of FLOOD LEVELS on the small rivers in the hydrographic basins: Crișul Pietros (tributary of the Crișul Negru river) – the tributaries related to the downstream sector SH Pietroasa, Bihor county. The phenomena can occur with greater probability on some small rivers in the hydrographic basins: Crișul Pietros – the tributaries related to the downstream sector confluence with the Inaru river”, reads the warning issued by INHGA.

On the other hand, other stretches of rivers in Bihor are under a yellow flood code until Thursday morning, at 08:00.

According to the INHGA specialists, it is about “Someșul Mic – upper basin and middle and lower basin tributaries (counties: Bihor and Cluj), Crișul Repede – upstream basin of SH Ciucea and the tributaries related to the downstream sector of SH Ciucea – upstream Ac. Lugaşu (counties: Cluj and Bihor), Crișul Negru – upstream basin of SH Sustiu and the tributaries related to the downstream sector of SH Sustiu – upstream SH Tinca (Bihor county)”.

In this context, ISU Crișana sent a series of recommendations for the population:

During the flood:

– Follow the recommendations sent by the authorities;
– If evacuation is necessary, move immediately to a high area nearby, specified by the authorities; if you were surprised by the flood, climb to the upper parts of the house or on the roof, until the rescue teams arrive;
– If you think you still have time, move important objects to higher floors;
– Switch off the main power switch. Unplug electrical appliances. Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water;
– Turn off the water and gas supply installations;
– Lock the doors of the house and protect the windows so that they are not broken by strong winds, water currents or objects carried away by water currents;
– Evacuate animals and valuables to pre-established places of refuge.

If you have to leave the house, observe the following rules as much as possible:

– Do not move through currents of water: you can lose your balance moving through currents of water about 15 centimeters high;
– Do not travel by car in the flooded area: in case of flooding, at a height of about 20 centimeters of water, water can enter the vehicle and cause loss of control. At the height of about 40 centimeters of water, the vehicle floats. At a height of 60 centimeters, most vehicles are taken by water.

– To prevent and limit the effects of flooding, clean ditches and gutters to allow the drainage of rainwater and build barriers to stop water from entering the house in the event of a flood.
