After Romania entered the European Union, certain areas of the country took full advantage of this. Thus, the authorities mobilized and struggled to attract European funds. And it looks like they succeeded in doing so.

A situation of the Regional Development Agency (ADR) West indicates that, within the Regional Operational Program (ROP) 2014-2020, a place in Romania was reborn with European funds.

Rather, we are talking about an area, more precisely the west of Romania. This place has developed strongly with the help of grants. Thus, four counties in the area managed to attract over 2 billion euros.

Moreover, the plans are also big for the coming years. By 2029, the absorption of another 2 billion euros is desired. Which are the 4 counties that achieved this feat? Timiș, Arad, Hunedoara, but also Caraș-Severin.

What made the place in Romania that was reborn with European funds so special? All projects were written and submitted in a timely manner. And later, the amounts were supplemented. The result was an absorption of 143% for the entire fiscal year.

Things were also confirmed by the director of ADR West. It seems that since Romania’s entry into the EU until now, a substantial amount of money has been attracted, which was also quickly invested in the region.

“Practically, the allocation also increased and there was also an overcontracting that the government assumed from the national budget. In total, in the 17 years since entering the EU, if we are to take it that way, we have absorbed over 2 billion euros net, money that we have invested in one form or another in the region”, explained Sorin Maxim, director of ADR West, for Libertatea.

Conveyor belt investments in western Romania

At the same time, he also revealed that through the Regional Operational Program 2014-2020 investments were made in total in 874 projects in the region. How was the money divided?

Timiș County, for example, attracted 278 million euros. On the other hand, Hunedoara managed to attract 270 million euros, while Arad 186 million euros. At the same time, Caraș-Severin attracted 185 million euros.

And yet how was this region reborn with European funds? The money went to numerous projects. Thus, investments were made in bike lanes, buses, trams, but also in schools and hospitals. Investments were also made in the field of infrastructure.

Around 400 kilometers of road were rebuilt. At the same time, more than 200 electric buses and trams were bought with European money. And the created bicycle paths are around 40 kilometers long.

Over 150 ambulances were also bought with European money. Several schools were also built from scratch, while others were either repaired or equipped. The cited source states that more than 10,000 apartments and 49 public buildings have been thermally insulated for lower heat consumption.

Obviously, other buildings of interest were also rehabilitated with European money. It can be said, therefore, that this area in Romania has not only been reborn with European funds, but also provides an example for other cities in the country.
