In 2022, there were on average 0.56 cars per capita in the EU – the same as in 2021, Eurostat data shows. Behind this figure, there are notable regional differences, ranging from 2.34 in Valle d’Aosta, Italy, to 0.08 in Mayotte, France, the EU statistical office notes. In terms of electric cars, the highest shares in total vehicles are found in the Netherlands and Sweden.
Regional motorization rates (cars per 1,000 inhabitants) are often linked to economic conditions, but can also be affected by specific circumstances. For example, the record rate in Valle d’Aosta was influenced by favorable tax rules.
In 2022, the top 3 regions with the highest motorization rate were in Italy: Valle d’Aosta, with 2,339 cars per 1,000 inhabitants, was followed by Provincia Autonoma di Trento, with 1,431 cars per 1,000 inhabitants, and Provincia Autonoma di Bolzano, with 935 cars per 1,000 inhabitants. Of the 10 regions with the highest motorization rate, 6 were in Italy, and one each in Finland, Greece, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic.
In Romania, the most congested is Bucharest, with 640 cars per thousand inhabitants, and the West region, with 447.
At the other end of the range, the French overseas region of Mayotte (83 cars per 1,000 inhabitants) was followed by the Greek Peloponnese (203 per 1,000 inhabitants) and French Guiana (217 per 1,000 inhabitants). Of the 10 regions with the lowest motorization rate, 4 were in Greece, 2 in France, 2 in Romania and 1 each in Germany and Austria. In particular, 2 of these were the metropolitan areas of Berlin (331) and Vienna (366).
The largest share of electric cars: Netherlands and Sweden
The regions of the Netherlands and Sweden stood out among the EU regions with the highest share of electric cars in total cars. The highest shares were recorded in Flevoland (12.8%) and Utrecht (6.6%) in the Netherlands and in Stockholm (6.6%) in Sweden. In the top 10, four regions were from the Netherlands, four from Sweden, Luxembourg (1 region) and one from Austria.
In Romania, all regions have percentages below 1%. Bucharest has 0.79%, the North-West 0.3%, all other regions are at 2% or below 2%.
