“It was a sinister and brutal attack. We live in a democratic society where there is no justification for such a thing. Those responsible brutalize their own communities and control others through intimidation and violence,” said Detective Inspector John Lyttle.
Deputy Chief Constable Bobby Singleton says it was a “shocking incident with ultra-violent levels. I thought these kinds of incidents were clearly in our past.”

Inquest sources say the Ulster Defense Association (UDA) has previously issued threats.
The UDA is a paramilitary group formed in September 1971. Its stated aim was to defend loyalist Protestant areas in Ulster and “to combat Irish republicanism, particularly the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA)”.
