Russian President Vladimir Putin “is not so reckless as to attack a NATO country,” Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said in an interview, according to kyivindependent.com.
The Polish minister was asked how much he considers Russia to be a threat to Poland. While he doesn’t think Putin is reckless enough to attack a NATO country, Putin is reckless enough to attack Ukraine and has become a war criminal.
Sikorski also stressed that Poland will not rule anything out when it comes to sending troops to Ukraine, especially as it helps create a situation where Putin is not sure what the West will do.
“We will not show our cards. We’ll let President Putin figure out what we’re going to do,” Sikorski said.
French President Emmanuel Macron said earlier this month he would consider sending troops to Ukraine.
Kiev has not called on the West to send troops to Ukraine, instead calling for increased arms deliveries to help Ukrainian soldiers defend themselves against Russian aggression.
Sikorski believes Putin should admit the invasion was a mistake
Sikorski expressed satisfaction at the passage of the US aid bill after months of delays and political battles.
“Ukraine desperately needs anti-aircraft missiles to protect its industry, power plants and infrastructure. I think it is much better to spend money on the defense of Ukraine than to have to rebuild it later. I think President Putin would do well to admit that the invasion was a mistake and recalculate, bearing in mind that we will help Ukraine as long as necessary,” he added.
Finally, the Polish official said that the war in Ukraine can only end when Putin “understands that the cost of continuing it, in terms of human lives and financial costs, is greater than the goal he wants to achieve.”
