13 students from Melanchthon de Blesewic secondary school, Holland, volunteered in Oradea and its surroundings, preparing food for the poor, supporting the sick and playing with orphaned children. They chose to spend the week dedicated to class trips in Romania, helping those in need, instead of choosing picturesque destinations, in well-known tourist spots, reports ebihoreanul.ro.

The excursion took place between April 18-25, according to a press release sent on Thursday by the Oradea Catholic Caritas Association, which supported the group of volunteers throughout their stay here.

The 13 students were accompanied by teachers Karin Vermeulen, Jan de Jong and Bernard Hoving and they did everything, at an intense pace.

Among other things, they prepared 100 sandwiches with their own hands which they then distributed at the asylum that shelters homeless people in Oradea, they visited the House of the Lord Jesus Child in Săcueni, where they played football, frisbee and badminton in mixed teams with the orphans .

They also helped prepare the meal, distributed packages of sustainable food in the poor areas of the village of Sălacea, took packages of sweets and equipment to children from disadvantaged families in the Bihor and Telechiu dioceses, but also to other beneficiaries under the care of Caritas, did gardening at the St. Elisabeta Nursing Home in Oradea, they visited the sick.

“The activity was a continuation of a program launched last year, in which students volunteer in localities belonging to the Diocese of Oradea to help families, individuals and institutions supported by the Oradea Catholic Caritas Association.

The financial fund for trips and activities was collected by students during a school year, at various charity fairs and school events”, the statement explains.
