The number of people in the European Union working as authors, journalists or linguists increased by 9.1% in 2022, up to 891,600 people, from 816,800 people in 2017, according to data published by Eurostat on Friday on the occasion of World Freedom Day To the press, writes AGERPRES.

In 2022, the member countries with the highest share of people working as an author, journalist or linguist in the EU were Germany (25.6%), France (12%) and Spain (9.1%). At the opposite pole, Malta, Cyprus, Latvia, Estonia and Luxembourg each had less than 0.5% of the total number of people employed as an author, journalist or linguist in the EU.

In Romania, the number of people working as authors, journalists or linguists decreased from 13,500 in 2017 to 13,000 in 2022. Comparatively, in Hungary, in 2022, there were over 20,000 people employed as authors, journalists or linguists and in the Czech Republic over 22,000.

Compared to the situation in 2017, the largest percentage increase in the number of people working as authors, journalists or linguists was recorded in Lithuania (166%), followed by Finland (31.5%) and Hungary (30.8%) . Instead, the most important decreases were experienced by Latvia (minus 35.6%), Estonia (minus 34.3%) and Greece (minus 22.5%).

Regarding the publishing industry, Eurostat data show that in 2022 at EU level there were 80,000 companies active in the field of book and periodical publishing or engaged in other publishing activities. The most important number of such companies was registered in France (23,469), Spain (5,981) and Germany (5,533). The fewest such companies were in Luxembourg (79), Cyprus (93) and Malta (105).

Of the 80,000 companies that in 2022 were active in the field of book and periodical publishing in the EU, a number of 2,363 were in Romania, increasing compared to a total of 2,286 in 2021.
