The Eurovision Song Contest, a music festival/television show watched by around 200 million people, kicks off on Sunday in Malmö, Sweden with the “turquoise carpet” gala, and fans say it’s an open year, with six countries having great chance for the title.

Bookmakers have Croatia, Switzerland and Ukraine as the top three favorites to win, while streaming data from Spotify suggests the Netherlands, Italy or host country Sweden have a strong chance of winning, according to reuters.com.

“This year is so exciting because there are four or five countries that really have a good chance of winning,” William Lee Adams, editor of Eurovision fan site Wiwibloggs, told the source.

And he continued: “Eurovision is so boring when you have only one clear favorite months before. But this year there is so much left to play for.”

Croatian contestant Baby Lasagna (real name Marko Purišić, 28) overtook Switzerland this week as the bookies’ favorite with ‘Rim Tim Tagi Dim’, about a young Croatian who leaves his home to aspire to become a “city boy” with better opportunities.

The music competition, which has been running since 1956, has increasingly embraced inclusion and acceptance among the LGBTQ+ community. That’s the theme of 24-year-old Swiss rapper and singer Nemo, who will perform ‘The Code’ – a drum and bass, opera, rap and rock song about his journey of self-discovery as a non-binary person.

Ukraine, which won Eurovision two years ago, months after it was invaded by Russia, is represented this year by the duo of alyona alyona, 28, and Jerry Heil, 32, with “Teresa & Maria”, a folk-influenced pop song with a strong dance beat and fast rap. Normally the winner hosts the following year’s pageant, but last year the pageant was held in Great Britain due to the war.

Another top contender is 26-year-old Joost Klein from the Netherlands with his song “Europapa”, which combines pop songs with happy hardcore. Klein, who lost his parents at a young age, says the song is about an orphan traveling through Europe trying to find himself because his father taught him to believe in a Europe without borders.

Also in the running is 23-year-old Angelina Mango from Italy with the song “La Noia”, which translates as “Boredom”.

Host nation Sweden are tipped to make it two wins in a row as they are represented by Norwegian twin brothers Marcus and Martinus Gunnarsen, who perform their song ‘Unforgettable’.

All songs participating in the 2024 contest can be heard on the Eurovision YouTube channel.

The two semi-finals will take place on Tuesday, May 7 and Thursday, May 9, and the grand final will take place on Saturday, May 11, 2024. The competition will be broadcast live on the Eurovision YouTube channel.

Romania is not participating in Eurovision 2024, as a result of the decision of the Board of Directors of TVR, which motivated the decision citing “financial constraints”.
