The miracle of Orthodoxy was accomplished. The Holy Light descended from heaven to Jerusalem and the Observer team once again witnessed the event. The divine call united five thousand people from all over the world to Church of the Holy Sepulchre, but not all had the privilege of entering the holy place because of the strict rules. A little while ago, the light that heralds the Resurrection of the Lord arrived in our country and we will be able to take it home after midnight.

The Holy Flame once again defeated the darkness and brought light to the souls of thousands of believers who came to witness the greatest miracle of the Christian world. Romanians, Israelis, Russians, Ukrainians, Armenians or Greeks shared the fraternal flame and announced the great news.

• Mădălina Iacob, Observer reporter: The miracle happened. The Holy Light descended on Jerusalem. Christ is risen, from the Holy Land!

The fire descended on the Tomb of Jesus at the prayers of Patriarch Theophilus of Jerusalem. It is said that the Light of the Resurrection descends from heaven through the great dome of the Church, like a spark. It is the oldest attested Christian miracle. Every year, the Tomb of the Lord is thoroughly checked by the police, so that there are no doubts that the fire could be lit by human hands.

According to tradition, the Patriarch takes off his priestly vestments and remains in a white robe. He circles the church three times, then takes four bundles of 33 lighted candles – the number of years Jesus lived on Earth. Then follow hours of prayers to invoke the divine miracle.

The flame glows and is said not to burn if you touch it for the first 30 minutes. This year, it was lit at 14:13. The Observator team was the only one from Romania that had the privilege to participate in the ceremony.

• Mădălina Iacob, Observer reporter: This year’s rules are much tougher. Right now the police are checking our documents. They want to see if the name on the ID corresponds to the list that the Jerusalem police have. A little over 20 journalists from all over the world were accredited to participate in the ceremony for the holy fire.

Only 3,000 pilgrims had access to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.

• Policeman: The police are here today to ensure the safety and security of all who arrive here. We are in a sensitive period, a state of war, security measures are high.

The Holy Light, brought to Bucharest by Archimandrite Teofil Anăstăsoaie

The Light of the Resurrection was brought to Bucharest by Archimandrite Teofil Anăstăsoaie, the Superior of the Settlements of the Romanian Patriarchate at the Holy Places.

• Ingrid Tîrziu, Observer reporter: From here, from Otopeni Airport, the Holy Light will go further, to all the Churches in our country. The delegates of the dioceses are already prepared to transport the Holy Light, so that at Midnight all Orthodox Christians will receive the Miracle of the Resurrection.
