Russian air defense systems have destroyed four long-range ATACMS missiles supplied by the US to Kiev that were launched by Ukrainian forces over the Crimean peninsula, the Russian Defense Ministry announced on Saturday.

The scale and impact of the alleged attack on the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, which was illegally annexed by Moscow in 2014, were unclear. Kiev has not yet commented on the allegations of the Russian Ministry of Defense.

Russia, which has been waging a full-scale war against Ukraine for more than two years, often announces alleged successes of its anti-aircraft defense in the event of Ukrainian drone or missile attacks, notes the German news agency DPA, cited by Agerpres.

Last Tuesday, Ukraine attacked the Russian army in Crimea with missiles recently received from the US. Independent media reported on strikes on three military bases in Crimea, resulting in several casualties.

In recent weeks, Washington has announced that it will supply Ukraine with ATACMS missiles with even longer range as part of a new arms package for Kiev. In previous deliveries, the range of missiles of this type was limited to 165 kilometers.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has promised to recover all the territory occupied by Russia in more than two years of war, including Crimea.
