Russia is no longer able to use the Black Sea as a springboard to destabilize other countries, and Ukraine and its partners have managed to ensure adequate security at sea, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in his speech to the Parliamentary Assembly of Maritime Economic Cooperation Black (PABSEC) on November 16.

Protecting the western part of the Black Sea allows Ukraine to use export corridors, and the Russians also flee the eastern side, trying to hide their warships from a Ukrainian fleet of maritime drones operating in the Black Sea.

Russia used the Black Sea for its aggression against Georgia in 2008, to destabilize the situation in Syria, and after the seizure of Crimea – in Ukraine and throughout Europe. But now such opportunities for Russia have been eliminated, which is one of the main results of the actions of Ukraine and its partners, Zelensky said.

Ships moved periodically

According to Ukrainian intelligence services, Russian forces in Crimea have been moving Black Sea Fleet vessels to Novorossiisk, Russia, for several months following repeated Ukrainian attacks on Moscow’s naval assets in Sevastopol and nearby waters.

The Russian Black Sea Fleet is less and less able to exercise control over a large part of the Black Sea and is now moving its naval assets from Sevastopol to the eastern part of the sea, Zelenskiy said in his speech on the evening of November 2. adding that “Ukraine’s success in the battle for the Black Sea is something that will go down in the history books.”

In total, according to Ukraine’s General Staff, Russia lost 22 ships and one submarine during the massive war.

A huge fleet

Russia has a huge fleet of ships of various types. Some of them are from the Soviet period, others have been modernized.

In total, there are 290 units. A list of current ships of the Russian Navy has been compiled from open sources. There are more than 290 warships, submarines and warships believed to be in active service with the Russian Navy, in reserve or under construction, based on public reports.

The Black Sea Fleet would total 54 ships, of which 7 are submarines.
