World Press Freedom Day is a chance to appreciate and thank journalists, editors, media outlets, fact-checkers, writers, photojournalists and others for the extremely important work they do in promoting democratic values and exposing fake news . Free and independent journalism globally protects democratic values and promotes informed societies. Today, however, the work of the free press is being challenged as the public is increasingly confronted with false narratives and misinformation

In 2024, more voters than ever before in history will go to the polls in national elections in 64 countries, as well as for the European Parliament, comprising almost 50% of the global population. The results of this election will prove significant for years to come. How citizens inform themselves about local, national and global issues and how disinformation and malicious actors seek to take advantage of the information space are more important than ever. Journalists play a key role in holding governments and institutions accountable and providing citizens with essential information for informed decision-making.

Freedom of the press is vital. Journalists investigate, analyze and report on issues of public interest. Their work enables citizens to engage in meaningful debate, shapes public discourse and promotes transparency. However, obstacles to press freedom remain, and the digital age has brought new challenges.

Purveyors of misinformation, false narratives and propaganda seek to manipulate our transparent and democratic system for personal gain. Like many other democracies, the United States has seen attempts by foreign governments and other malign actors to mislead our public, spread false narratives about global events, and undermine democratic systems. Along with other Western democracies, Romania plays an important role in addressing these global challenges. Romanian journalists are among those who have courageously written about the facts and tragic consequences of Russia’s unjust and illegal war against Ukraine.

These are difficult challenges, but we know there are also solutions, which require collaboration. Journalists, educators, NGOs and governments are working to develop media education and critical thinking and strengthen resistance against manipulation. Journalists must strive to maintain journalistic ethics and integrity. Fact-checking organizations can debunk false narratives, disinformation and altered images.

On this World Press Freedom Day, we renew our commitment to defend and promote journalistic freedom. Not only to ensure that our citizens are informed, but also to promote a future based on truth, democratic values and transparent information. Freedom of the press is not just a right – it is a shared responsibility; we all have to make our contribution.
