The Apostolic Nuncio for Romania and the Republic of Moldova, Monsignor Giampiero Gloder, arrived in Bucharest on Monday, announces the Confederation of Romanian Bishops.

Monsignor Giampiero Gloder, titular Archbishop of Telde, was appointed by Pope Francis, on February 23, as Apostolic Nuncio to Romania and the Republic of Moldova.

The approved Apostolic Nuncio in Romania and the Republic of Moldova, Monsignor Giampiero Gloder, was born in Asiago, Italy, in 1958 and was ordained a priest in 1983.

After studying dogmatic theology, he entered the diplomatic service in 1993. Monsignor Gloder’s diplomatic career included posts in Guatemala and within the Secretariat of State of the Holy See.

In 2013, he was appointed president of the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy and titular Archbishop of Telde. Pope Francis consecrated him bishop in the same year. The service brought to the Church by Monsignor Gloder continued with appointments in the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and as vice-camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church (2014).

In 2019, he became Apostolic Nuncio to Cuba, a mission he fulfilled until his appointment as Apostolic Nuncio to Romania and the Republic of Moldova (February 2024).

Archbishop Gloder holds a degree in canon law from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas and a doctorate in dogmatic theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University. In addition to his native Italian, he speaks French, English and Spanish.

The position of Apostolic Nuncio in Romania was vacant from April 13, 2023, after the end of the mission of His Excellency Monsignor Miguel Maury Buendia, currently Apostolic Nuncio in Great Britain.

The Apostolic Nuncio is the permanent diplomatic representative of the Holy See next to a state, i.e. the head of the diplomatic mission. According to the rules of international law approved by the Vienna Convention of 1961, the Apostolic Nuncio has the rank of ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary, with the same prerogatives as the ambassadors of any other state. In Romania, the Apostolic Nuncio is also the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps.
