The elections in Romania were faced with strong absenteeism. Given that the elections for the position of mayor take place in a single round, it is very likely that the newly elected mayor will not receive even 15% of the votes of the residents who are over 18 years old.

The elections in Bucharest won with 190,000 votes, out of 1,800,000 voters. The EU is asking us to vote

Sensing the danger of absenteeism, but also the probability that extremist parties will gain ground, the European Parliament released, today, a clip in which grandparents from several states urge people to vote. “You were born in prosperous and peaceful times. But democracy must be defended”, is the symbolic slogan of the clip you have below.

A Newsweek Romania simulation based on a survey carried out today shows that the mayor of Bucharest could win the elections with only 190,000 votes, although over 1,800,000 voters have the right to vote.

The opinion poll, broadcast today, shows the following:

Poll for Bucharest City Hall:

Nicusor Dan – 37%

Gabriela Firea – 22%

Popescu Piedone – 22%.

MIhai Enache – 7%.

As Gabriela Firea entered the competition only a few days ago, it is very possible that she will recover part of the gap with Nicușor Dan. Therefore, averaging the percentages between the first two candidates, the winner could have somewhere around 30% (Burduja does not appear as measured).

How many citizens of Bucharest come to vote?

In 2020, turnout was 36.9%. It seems like a small figure, but compared to 2016 it was higher. In 2016, only 33% showed up for the elections for Bucharest.

If we had a turnout of 37%, it would mean that 660,000 Bucharest residents will vote.

If the mayor’s office is won with 30% of the votes of those present at the polls (we have 4 strong candidates), the mayor-elect would receive 199,000 votes. Compared to the 1,800,000 eligible voters, the newly elected mayor of Bucharest will win with 11% of the votes.

Mayors will win by up to 15% of the total voting population in most cities. In 2024, there are 4 parties that have over 15% voting intention: PSD, PNL, AUR and ADU, to which are added 2 parties 5% or even more in some cities: UDMR and SOS Sosoacă.
