On April 29 every year we celebrate War Veterans Day. This date reminds us of the Royal Decree of King Charles I, of April 29, 1902, when the title of war veteran was first instituted, in honor of the soldiers who fell in the War of Independence.
Where does the title “war veteran” come from?
The title of “war veteran” was recognized for the first time on April 29, 1902, when King Charles I promulgated, at the request of the survivors, the High Decree establishing this title, in accordance with the Convention of European States of Geneva, in honor of the combatants covered with glory on the redoubts of the War of Independence (1877-1878).
In article 2, the High Royal Decree of April 29, 1902, provided: “In order for each veteran soldier to be assured of peace and occupation for the rest of his life, the necessary things will be made available to him for this purpose, as an incentive for future generations” , notes the official website of the National Association of War Veterans.
Thus, the participants in the War of Independence were provided, in addition to this honorable status, means for a decent living and various facilities, in recognition of their sacrifices on the battlefield.
