The doctors at the “St. Spiridon” Hospital in Iași managed to perform two liver transplants in less than 24 hours.

The first was performed on a 48-year-old man from Iasi. The donor was a brain dead patient from a hospital in Iași.

The second beneficiary patient is a 52-year-old woman, originally from Suceava. In this second case, the donor was a person from Sibiu who was also in brain death and the support of the General Inspectorate for Aviation was needed, as stated by the SMURD coordinator for the Moldova area – Diana Cimpoeșu: “I appealed to the Department of Emergency Situations, to the General Inspectorate for Aviation, which sent the SMURD plane, took the team of surgeons from here, from Iași, they went to Sibiu, took the liver sample and returned in a while record, so that this transplant could be done in a very short time. For transplantation, this time is very important, because the organ must be kept in conditions of, let’s say, survival, in quotes, so that it can function in the new body.”
