Klaus Iohannis and the Parliament bring Romania into conflict with the Arab world

The direct involvement of Romania in the defense of Israel and against Yemen, in the conflict in the Red Sea, requested by Klaus Iohannis and voted with two hands by our parliamentarians, at the behest and under the command of the USA, is causing the entire Arab world to be upset. Especially against the background of the genocide in the Gaza Strip, which also generated the reaction of the Yemeni Al-Houthi group. And this despite the fact that Spain, France and Italy, for example, have clearly expressed their refusal to participate in the American operation.

Romania, the country where diplomacy and foreign policy no longer exist, continues to self-sabotage its international relations. The past few days, parliamentarians unanimously voted for Klaus Iohannis’ request to officially participate, under US command, in the conflict in the Red Sea. From the European Union, only Denmark, Greece and the Netherlands participate in the operation under the American flag.

Late last year, to a US request for states to join Operation Prosperity Guardian (OPG), France responded that it supported efforts to ensure freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and the surrounding area, already operating in the region, but that its ships would remains under French command and has not said whether it will deploy more naval forces. As for Italy, it has conveyed that it will send the naval frigate Virginio Fasan to the Red Sea to protect its national interests in response to specific requests made by Italian shipowners, specifying that this is part of its existing operations and not part of Operation Prosperity Guardian. At the same time, Spain announced that it would only participate in NATO-led missions or EU-coordinated operations and that it would not participate unilaterally in the Red Sea operation.

The Official Gazette published the Decision of the meeting of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, which approved the letter of President Klaus Iohannis requesting the participation of the Romanian Army in the Prosperity Guardian coalition maritime operation, under the command of the United States of America, in the area of ​​responsibility in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden and the territory of the State of Bahrain.

“Against the background of the conflict in the Gaza Strip and the intensification of the actions of the Yemeni rebel group Al-Houthi on some objectives and interests related to Israel, including on the maritime commercial traffic in the Red Sea, the security situation in the area of ​​the Yemeni coasts and the Bab-al-Mandeb Strait constantly damaged, with negative repercussions at the level of the European and world economy. On December 18, 2023, the United States of America undertook the intervention against the Al-Houthi rebels by launching the Coalition Maritime Operation Prosperity Guardian (OPG) and appealed to the international community for involvement in resolving the security situation in the Red Sea by participating with staff personnel and naval capabilities, as well as by intensifying the exchange of information”, the Parliament’s Decision states.

Parliament approved Romania’s participation in Prosperity Guardian with up to three military personnel, but the official involvement is what will create problems for our country.

“The participation of personnel in this operation, within the command deployed on the territory of the state of Bahrain, is carried out after the regulation of the legal status of the Romanian military on the territory of this state. The financial funds necessary to participate in the missions are provided from the budget allocated to the Ministry of National Defense in 2024”, the Parliament’s Decision also states. It should be noted that after the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023, the Houthi movement in Yemen blockaded Israel in the Red Sea and launched a series of attacks against commercial ships bound for or bound for Israel, with the stated aim of preventing the bombing Gaza and forcing Israel to leave food and medicine in the Gaza Strip.
