The accident took place on December 16, 2021, on the E85 road, in the village of Roșiori, Suceava county. The ambulance was going to pick up a patient, and at one point, the driver of the ambulance, named Ioana Apopii, 46 years old, overtook a column of cars, across the continuous line.

The first car in the convoy was a Dacie Logan driven by a 56-year-old woman from Rădășeni, who was turning left. The car was hit head-on by a speeding ambulance, being thrown into the ditch on the side of the road.

The woman died on the spot, while the passenger on the right, a 53-year-old man, was slightly injured.

The police identified several witnesses who said that the ambulance only had its lights on, not the acoustic ones.

The investigators concluded that the ambulance driver, although on duty, overtook recklessly, and the woman behind the wheel of the Logan had no way of predicting in time that the ambulance was coming at speed from behind.

“Having only light signals in operation, at an intersection with a Prohibited Overtaking sign and continuous longitudinal marking, he engaged in overtaking a column of vehicles stopped behind a Dacia Logan car, which was making a left turn,” the referral indictment states in trial.

The man tried to invoke an internal regulation that would not have allowed the use of sirens at night, a fact that is contrary to the provisions of the road legislation.

The driver of the ambulance was checked at that time with the breathalyzer, resulting in a blood alcohol level of 0.
