On the bank of Ampoi, around 20 Sri Lankans have gathered to see where they will hold a party the following weekend. It is about the Sri Lankan community in Alba Iulia, which is preparing a party for them, but also for the residents of the city.

I stayed with Lakmal and Emil, two of the Sri Lankans from Alba. They came to Romania relatively recently, however, they wanted to speak in Romanian in front of the camera.

A gesture of respect for the community, that’s what they called it. And their party is also a gesture for the community, the community that received them.

They came from a distant land with other traditions and customs. Traditions and customs that they want to make known to those in Alba Iulia.

For this reason, on Saturday, April 27, they will organize a party on the banks of the Ampoi. It is a party where they want to celebrate the Sri Lankan New Year, but also to show what customs they have in the country they come from.

The entry into the new year was on April 13/14, according to the solar calendar used by them. It is a holiday held by Sinhalese and Tamils, the two majority ethnic groups in Sri Lanka.

In the Sri Lankan tradition, in the calendar, the sun moves from the House of Pisces to the House of Aries.

What am I preparing for the party?

The organizers want to bring as much of their tradition as possible. As a result, they will have two DJs at the party. They will play traditional Sri Lankan music as well as commercial music.

Also, an important factor will be the food.

Along with them will come a chef from Bucharest who will cook traditional Sri Lankan food. It is one of the points that the organizers want to present to the people of Alba Iulia. There will also be games during the event.

They will challenge the residents of Alba Iulia, who will want to participate in the party, to a series of games. For example, they will organize a kind of “put the tail on the donkey” only that instead of a donkey, in Sri Lanka, the main character is an elephant.

The party is organized by Alba Warriors. It is an organization of Sri Lankans from Alba Iulia that also has a cricket team. Alba Iulia City Hall is also involved in the organization of the event.
