Sheep farmers from Bistrita-Năsăud county have already sent over 6,200 lambs for export for which they received the best price in recent years, said Ioan Câmpean, president of the Pro Ovis Federation.

Eight million lambs from Romania go for export during this period, the sheep farmers estimating that they will collect one billion euros from their sale, in European and Arab countries.

The sale price is the best in recent years, sheep breeders say, but this fact also means an increase in the price of lamb meat in Romania, before the Orthodox Easter.

Sheep farmers from Bistrita-Năsăud county have already sent over 6,200 lambs for export for which they received the best price in recent years, said Ioan Câmpean, president of the Pro Ovis Federation.

Ioan Campean: The lambs were well paid, the best price I’ve had so far, 23-24 lei per live kilogram. These lambs went to Italy, Croatia and some Greece, countries that always paid well.

During this period contracts with Arab countries are negotiated.

Ioan Campean: We hope that the Arabs will pay well. And last year they paid handsomely.

Depending on the price offered by the Arabs, we will also know how much the kilogram of meat will cost on the domestic market.

Ioan Campean: If it is 24 lei per kilogram, then the meat is about 48-50 lei. I also say that they all influence their export. So, if the export price is good, then here too people have claims, that if they sell a lamb, they don’t let it go to waste, let it be the same price as the Arabs.

Compared to last year, lamb meat is about 14% more expensive than the European average
