The Sibiu County Emergency Clinical Hospital hosted the first organ collection, which took place on Sunday, April 28. The organs of a 50-year-old patient, who was brain dead after choking on food, were donated at the request of her family to give others a chance at life.
The patient was brought to the hospital on April 21
After being brought to the hospital’s Emergency Department, the patient was intubated and mechanically ventilated, following an incident of mechanical asphyxiation, after she choked on food on the terrace of a restaurant in Sibiu.
The patient was diagnosed with a severe intracranial hematoma and her condition deteriorated rapidly. Doctors confirmed brain death, and the family made the decision to donate the patient’s organs, according to Ziare.com.

Medical teams from Bucharest, Cluj and Iași participated in the organ collection process. Liver, kidney, cornea, and bone were harvested and transported to transplant centers.
“The organ harvesting intervention – liver, kidney, cornea and bone – was carried out on Sunday, April 28, 2024. The team from Bucharest took bone tissue, the doctors from Iasi harvested the liver and cornea, and the team from in Cluj he took the kidneys. After the sampling, the teams of doctors urgently left for the transplant centers they belong to”, says a press release sent to SCJU Sibiu.
