What is the lowest pension in Romania?

Pensioners in Romania are fighting a hard battle with old age, but also with poverty. Many old people ended up receiving very small pensions, some of them slightly higher than 100 lei.

Nestorescu Cecilia Daniela, a 69-year-old woman receives a pension of 135 lei per month.

He lives in Zimnicea, Teleorman county and suffers daily from hunger and helplessness.

She is a university graduate and has 20 years of experience in the field of work, but she has to survive on this money, given that her health problems require monthly treatment.

Moreover, the woman has to buy wood for the fire, pay the utilities and eat. In order to have bread on the table, neighbors and people who know her difficult situation periodically help her, offering her food, wood, even money.

How much is the minimum pension in Romania?

In Romania, the old-age pension is due to people who meet, cumulatively, on the date of retirement, the conditions regarding the standard retirement age and the minimum period of contribution provided by Law no. 263/2010. The standard retirement age is 65 years for men and 63 years for women.

The minimum contribution period is 15 years, both for women and for men. Also, the full contribution period is 35 years, both for women and for men.

The value of the guaranteed minimum pension increased by 13.8% at the beginning of the year, along with the pension point. More precisely, the minimum income of a large number of pensioners reached the amount of 1,281 lei.

According to the law, the pension is granted at the request of the entitled person or his curator, submitted in person or through a representative appointed by special power of attorney.

The application for retirement and the documents proving the fulfillment of the conditions provided by Law no. 263/2010, are submitted to the Pension House in the area where the person resides.

Women who have children can retire earlier

From September 1, 2024, the new pension law, called Law no. 360/2023. It provides for the reduction of the retirement age for women who have children, including for families who have adopted and raised children for at least 16 years.

Specifically, the standard retirement age will be reduced as follows:

  • 6 months – 1 child born and raised;
  • 1 year – 2 children born and raised;
  • 1 year and 6 months – 3 children born and raised;
  • 2 years – 4 children born and raised;
  • 2 years and 6 months – 5 children born and raised;
  • 3 years – 6 children born and raised;
  • 3 years and 6 months- 7 and over children born and raised.

“Additional benefits for mothers are introduced: women who have given birth to and raised several children up to the age of 16 can benefit from a reduction in the retirement age of up to 3 years and 6 months,” Nicolae Ciucă said on Facebook.
