TikTok is launching a new educational section, covering STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), in the application in the European space, including Romania, starting with Ireland and the United Kingdom.

TikTok introduces a section dedicated to educational content in addition to “For You”, which will include information provided by respected experts in the field of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), according to a statement sent to StartupCafe.ro on Tuesday.

The feed will feature content in English with automatically translated subtitles, verified by two independent organizations.

The new feed follows the success of the US STEM feed, which has contributed to a 24% increase in STEM content globally since launch.

People under 18 will have the educational feed turned on by default, and they can adjust their content settings in the app if they want.

Also, those over the age of 18 who are interested in educational content can opt-in to the STEM feed by going to the content settings in the app.

To provide the TikTok community with quality STEM content, TikTok is expanding its partnerships by working with Common Sense Networks and the Poynter Institute in Europe.

Common Sense Networks will review all content to ensure it is appropriate for the STEM feed, while Poynter will evaluate the accuracy of the information presented. Content that does not meet these two checks will not be eligible for the STEM feed.

“We believe discovery is central to the TikTok experience, and we’re always looking to help our community find new and relevant content by introducing new and exciting formats. We hope that the launch of the STEM feed in Europe will inspire a new generation of engineers, mathematicians and science enthusiasts!” – Marlène Masure, Managing Director of TikTok EMEA Operations.

The new feature is launched today in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and in the coming weeks it will also expand to the rest of European countries, including Romania.
